Roe v. Wade

WHY CAN'T WE LOVE THEM BOTH
by Dr. and Mrs. J.C. Willke
CHAPTER 8
POST ROE VS. WADE

On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down all laws in every state that in any way had protected the lives of developing unborn children. It legalized abortion in all 50 states, for the full nine months of pregnancy, for social and economic reasons.
It created a new, basic constitutional right for women in the right to privacy which the Supreme Court had created only a few years earlier. That right to privacy was "broad enough to encompass a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy."
It stated that the law protects only "legal persons" and that "legal personhood does not exist prenatally."
It authorized no legal restrictions on abortion in the first three months.
No restrictions from then until viability except those needed to make the procedure safer for the mother.
Abortion was allowed until birth if one licensed physician judged it necessary for the mother’s "health."

Personal Experiences~~~

"When I was in tenth grade I was dating a guy that was three years older than me and we started having sex when I wasn't ready yet. I got pregnant within three months, and I decided to have an abortion so I could finish high school and go to college. Me and that guy are still together today and we have a beautiful three-year old daughter named Faith. I think that it was the right decision for me at that time, after all, I was only fifteen and no where near ready to have a child."

" I have lots of reproductive health problems and the doctor told me that I only have a 15% chance of having children in the future. I think that abortions are not an option for me since I have such a slim chance of getting pregnant. One of my friends has had four abortions, and it makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it."

What advice can you offer a woman considering an abortion?

" Get it done if you feel like it is the right thing to do."

"Only do what your heart tells you. Don't listen to other people, after all, it's your baby."

" Think about all the options. Also, seek a therapist."

"You should definitely seek all the options and see what is bets in the long term for you. Don't let anyone make your decision for you. Do all the research and be smart about it."

Should there be a limit on how many abortions a woman can have?

"Yes, to protect thier own health."

"Yes, I believe a woman should not have more than three abortions. Women who are using abortion as a form of birth-control should suffer the consequences if it happens more than three times."

"I think that there should be a limit. It is not only dangerous for the mother's reproductive health, but it is also a little ridiculous that women are getting four, five, and six abortions before they are 30. They need to learn sometime."

"It should not be used as a form of birth control. So, yes, there should be a limit."

"I think if we are going to put a limit on the number of abortions, then that may lead the government to make others restrictions as well. No telling what they will ban next, the number of children you can have?"

Should Abortion Be Illegal???

" It should be legal because it's not up to the government to decide what a woman should do with her body."

"I thnk abortion should be legal because it is a woman's right to choose if she is to have a child. It is her body."

"I am pro-choice. I believe since women are more affected by childcare, the decision of keeping or abortion the fetus is thier own personal decision."

"I believe that a woman should have control over her body. If the government makes abortion illegal, it will only make it more dangerous and difficult for women to get it done. Women are going to continue to seek abortions even if they ban it."

"I think that abortion should be made illegal. I'm not saying women should not have thier own rights, but I think abortion is wrong no matter what. Some people cannot have children at all so abortion is just a way of saying whatever to the unborn child."

" There shouldn't be government control on women's reproductive freedom. If they take that away from us, whats left?"

"I think that whatever women choose to do with thier own bodies is their own choice. Leave it at that."
